It's still on the tentative list of sites to be brought in to the UNESCO fold. But as Myanmar's tourism industry expands, Bagan's profile is gaining prominence. The capital city of the first if the first Myanmar Kingdom, this enormous Buddhist complex contains more than 2,500 intricate monuments dating to the 10th century.
01. YANGON:
Yangon is the former Capital city of Myanmar and now the Second Capital of the State. It covers over 350sq.km and has a population of over 5 million. The attractions in Yangon are - the Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the Wonders of the World. Four places that never fails to visit, Kipling called it “A Golden Mystery, A BEAUTIFUL WINKING, WAKING WONDER”. Around Yangon, there are many places to go such as: Thanlyin - 45 minute drive from Yangon, it was once a tradingport occupied by the Portuguese in early 17th centtury; Bago - the ancient capital of the Mon Kingdom in the 15th century, located only 80km from Yangon; Pyay - Located about 285km north of Yangon, on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. places of interests are –Shwesandaw Pagoda, Shwe Phone Pwint Pagoda, Hsehtatkyi Pagoda, Bawbawgyi and Bebegyi Pagoda, Payagyi and Payama stupas and Kyaikhtiyo – is about 160km from Yangon, this mystical Pagoda stands on a gold gilded boulder, precariously perched on the edge of the hill over 1100 m above sea-level
02. BAGAN:
The main tourist attraction in Myanmar and one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia, is located on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. It covers 42 sq.km containing over 2000 well-preserved pagodas and temples of the 11th.- 13th century.Shwezigon Pagoda (1087), Ananda Temple (1090), Thatbyinnyu Temple (mid-12th,century), Gadawpalin Temple (13th. Century), Dhammayangyi Temple (1167), Gubyaukgyi Temple (early 13th.century), Shwesandaw Pagoda (early 11th.century), Sulamani Temple (1181), Bu Phaya, MingalaZedi, Lawka Nanda Pagoda, the Bagan Palace and museum are the attractions.
03. MANDALAY:
THE CENTRE OF MYANMAR CULTURE and the last Capital of the Myanmar Kings, is located in the Central Myanmar, 668k north of Yangon. Today, it is the third largest city boasting its rich cultural heritage. It is also the commercial centre with rail, road, river and air links to all parts of the country.
The attractions in Mandalay are Mandalay Hill – 230 metres in elevation, commands a magnificent view of the city and surrounding countryside. The legend has it that the Buddha on his visit, had made a prophecy that a great city would be founded at the foot of this Hill; Mandalay Palace; Shwenandaw Monastery; Kuthodaw Pagoda – surrounded with 729 marble slabs inscribed with the Three Baskets of Buddhist Pali Canon, often called “the World Biggest Book” built in 1868; Atumashi Monastery and Maha Muni Buddha Image built in 1784.
04. INLE LAKE:
Inlay Lake 900 metres above sea-level, 22km long and 10km in width, surrounded by blue high mountains, It is well known for the leg-rowers. Attractions are Ywama village which streets are a web of canals, some beautiful teak houses built on large wooden poles driven into the lake bed; Phaung-daw-U Pagoda – houses four small Buddha Images. The attractions in Inlay lake are: Taunggyi - The capital of Shan State, is crowded with ethnic minorities in their traditional dresses; Kalaw - locating 1400 metres above sea-level, with many Tudor and English gardens of colonial days remain, situated 70km west of Taunggyi; Pindaya - 45km drive from Kalaw, well-known for its extensive limestone caves with stalactites and stalagmites. The caves are set deep in the hillsides, at the entrance stands a 15 metre high Shwe-U-Min Pagoda
05. GOLDEN ROCK:
A huge boulder completely covered by gold leaves stands precariously on the edge of a cliff. From Kin Pun base camp, take an open truck which is compulsory through a steep winding11 km road which leads to the upper staging point. From the “upper area”, travellers must at present walk the final stage, approximately 4 km up-steep paths, which ascend some 500m to the Pagoda platform.
